The water in my house gets HOT!, then cold. I have been hitting the reset button and this resolves it for a couple days, then the same scenario starts again. I need advice on whether to change the element or the thermostat. Thanks!

How "hot"  is your hotwater?  You may be allowing it to get too hot, thus tripping the thermal overload.
